Chapter 54 Meeting Notes: May 2006


Minutes of the monthly meetings are provided here for the convenience of those unable to attend the meetings, and are not to be considered official Chapter records. Only those documents produced and retained by the Chapter Secretary are official. Minutes are posted in the month that they are taken, not the month that they are read and approved. The list of those present is inclusive, and may include non-members and guests.

Self-Introductions

April minutes were read by Secretary Russell Taylor

Committee Reports(s):

Treasurer: Frank Butler reported the following:
Checking: $1,585.48
Certificate of Deposit: $1,735.00
Petty Cash: $226.74
Disbursements: Check number 1081 in the amount of $180.91 to WHRO for April lunch.
Received a check from Marquis in the amount of $180.91 for lunch sponsorship and a check
from Evertz in the amount of $850.00 for DTV measurement sponsorship.
Total Chapter assets: $3, 547.22

SBE National: Linda Baun has resigned as SBE National Certification Director to become Vice President of the Wisconsin Association of Broadcasters.

EAS: Keith O’Malley not present. Eastern Region EAS Local Emergency Communications Committee
and Hampton Roads Emergency Management Committee annual meeting will be held on May 25, 2006 from
10 am to 12 pm at the Virginia Beach Emergency Communications Center. Local area broadcasters
are invited to attend.

Certification: Bill Swartz received an award from SBE in recognition of his 5 years of service
as Certification Chairman. There are 5 people signed up to take the June 2-12 exam. June 9 is
the application deadline for the August 11-21 exam.

Web: Ted Hand was present, no news

Frequency Coordination: Ted Hand reported a STL location change at WNDJ-FM 104.9 on the middle
peninsula. Golf Channel and ESPN are in Williamsburg for the LPGA, some frequency issues, all
are fixed. Va Beach PD has added microwave to there helicopter, WQDV270, 6425-6525 MHz, four channels

Membership: Richard Dyer was not present. The 2006 SBE Membership Drive started March 1 goes to May 31, 2006.
All current SBE members who sponsor a new member will receive $5 off 2007 dues and are eligible for additional
prizes. See more details in The Signal and www.sbe.org.

Digital Transition: Committee will start in June. The committee will discuss topics related to the digital
television transition. The committee will work on standardizing station identification in the program guide for
DTV signals in the market. Anyone interested in being on the committee should contact John Heimerl or Chris Gunnufsen.

New Business: Ted Hand made a motion for the Chapter to donate $150 in memory of Paul Hecht to the
Redeemer Lutheran Church in Portsmouth, VA. The motion was seconded by Dave Bateman. The motion was voted on and passed.

The Whitlock Group Convergence show will be held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Tuesday May 16.

Program: This month Ken Freed, Sales Engineer from JVC, spoke on HDV - Affordable High Definition
Production. MPEG video compression and improvements in HD camcorders were discussed. HD formats
and HD editing were also discussed.
